Prayer:

May Holy Mary, our Mother, who also experienced the rejection at the precise moment when she was going to give her baby to the World, help us to welcome the most different among us, to unite in love and to be a holy family. That we may be freed from all forms of discrimination, rejection and marginalization that the plentiful blessings of God may accompany those who welcome the foreigner in the name of Christ.

Oración:

Que María Santísima, nuestra Madre, que también experimentó el rechazo en el preciso momento en que estaba a punto de dar a su Hijo al mundo, nos ayude a acoger los más diferentes entre nosotros, unirnos en el amor y ser una única familia.  Que nos libere de todas las formas de discriminación, rechazo y marginación y que las abundantes bendiciones de Dios acompañen a quienes acogen al extranjero en nombre de Cristo.

Prayer:

Mary and Joseph, you who were forced to leave your land to save Jesus' life, we ask you that our governments do not become accomplices of an economic system that each day produces more poverty and forces many men and women to be separated from their families in order to find a better way of life. We also ask for all migrants that we may continue seeing in you the model of a family that regardless of having been exiled to a foreign land knew how to continue being faithful to the God of love and unity.

María y José, ustedes que fueron obligados a dejar su tierra para salvar la vida de Jesús, les pedimos por nuestros gobiernos para que no sean cómplices de un sistema económico que cada día produce más pobreza y provoca que muchos hombres y mujeres tengan que separarse de su familia en busca de mejores condiciones de vida.  También les pedimos por todos los migrantes para que sigamos viendo en ustedes el modelo de una familia que a pesar de haber sido desterrada en tierra extranjera supo permanecer fiel al Dios del amor y la unidad.

Prayer:
Sacred Family of Nazareth, you experienced living going from one place to the next because of unjust situations. We ask you for the reunification of the families of our migrant brothers and sisters who have suffered the separation of their beloved family members because of deportations. We ask that the Catholic Church, faithful to the mission received from our Savior, continue to carry out the agreement of defending and promoting the rights of migrants, demanding integral migration policies with a human face which will keep in mind the families of the migrants so that their family reunification can be a reality.
Oración:
Sagrada Familia de Nazaret que experimentaste vivir en un lado y en otro a causa de las situaciones de injusticia te pedimos por la reunificación familiar de nuestros hermanos migrantes que han sufrido la separación de sus seres queridos a causa de la deportación. Te pedimos que la Iglesia Católica, fiel a la misión recibida del Salvador, continué cumpliendo el compromiso de defender y promover los derechos de las y los migrantes, demandando políticas migratorias integrales con rostro humano, que tomen en cuenta a las familias de los migrantes para que la reunificación familiar sea una realidad.

Bi-national Gathering, September 19-21, 2011

Sharing Life and Dignity in Christ Our Peace was the title of a recent bi-national gathering of Church leaders, clergy, religious, and laity from the Arizona-Mexico borderland region.  CRS Southwest along with CRS Mexico gathered with over forty participants from Dioceses without Borders –a tri-diocesan pastoral initiative of Tucson, Phoenix, and the archdiocese of Hermosillo, MX.- and Manos Unidas, a bi-national farm worker ministry to listen and share stories of the social reality of communities living along the US/ Mexico border in Arizona.

The agenda included presentations on Peacebuilding and Mission in the 21st Century by Fr. William R. Headley, dean of the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies at University of San Diego, and Mysticism and Social Justice on the Border by Anna Alicia Chavez of CRS SW.

Hermosillo’s Archbishop, Ulysses Macias Salcedo presented a prayerful reflection on the pastoral letter by Mexican Bishops entitled, Que en Cristo Nuestra Paz Mexico tenga Vida Digna (That Mexico may have Life with Dignity in Christ Our Peace).   In this document the bishops address the growing violence in their society and speak of the need to work for a culture of peace. The bishops acknowledge that the dream of a more just society can become a reality through nationwide peacebuilding efforts where the Church is committed to build just relationships among all people and institutions. The bishops call for a reformation of the country’s legal and justice system which currently has a 97% impunity rate, reconciliation and healing for the thousands of families who are grieving the murders of their loved ones, advocacy for more just legislation, and a revival of the faith through evangelization and catechesis for all Catholics in order to build the new Mexico where all of Mexico may live with dignity.

Bishop Kicanas followed with a response to, stressing the need to work together as one Church with a unified voice in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Mexico. CRS Mexico’s Head of Office, Lynette Asselin also presented a sketch of their 3-year work plan highlighting their commitment to work with the Bishops on their peacebuilding efforts. At the end of the second day, Bishop Kicanas celebrated mass with the group along with worshiping community of Our Lady of Guadalupe parish in Nogales, Senora.

There was a great desire to strengthen the relationships and networking capacity between the various groups represented. Their hope is for a more cohesive effort among them to help bring about greater relief to the pervasive suffering of the immigrants and their families with whom they live and care for.  Their stories recounted the widespread human rights violations, the growing violence, and fear of the “other” witnessed in their communities. The most common concern was the growing disintegration of the family unit, due in large part to the deportations of one or both parents which is leaving many families in crisis. The meeting resulted in an agreement to focus specifically on the issue of separation of family members and in the coming months the group will work to identify a more concrete plan of action.
